Reborn Baby Dolls as Props for Film and Television

In the film industry babies can only be used for minutes at a time when filming. This means that if there is to be a lot of filming then more than one child needs to be on set (as well as a carer) and these child also need to be paid for their time. The cost can be quite large depending on the filming.

Using reborn baby dolls to take the place of real babies would keep filming going, cut back on the people on the set and be cheaper for the production. A reborn artist would be able to make more than one doll with the same features but different expressions to take the place of a real baby.

Actors would have no difficulty substituting reborn dolls for real babies as a reborn doll feels like a real baby. The weight alone is a factor in the way the doll is held. Reborn dolls are always held like real babies, this may be some instinctual feature in us humans that cares for what we feel to be a baby. It doesn’t really matter in this case except to make it easier for an actor to play the part of holding a baby in his/her arms and making it believable.

Reborn baby dolls can also be made in many forms and preemie baby reborn are some of the most sort after and collected. Using a real preemie baby is dangerous for the child as its environment must be very controlled until it is old enough and strong enough to be able to with stand the outside world.

Using a reborn doll in place of real preemie babies opens up the scope for film and television makers to include in scripts the possibility of inclusion of the tiniest members of our society.

Reborn doll artists have always been exceptionally creative and cannot help but experiment with their molds and applications. We are seeing more and more fantasy reborn dolls being produced which again are perfect for the film industry.

Elf reborn dolls, vampire reborn babies, the list is as endless as a writers vision for a baby.

There is the purist reborn doll artists that may not like to see their art form turned into Dracula’s child or some baby gremlin but for other reborn artists it is a challenge they would love to have.

If you are a reborn artist think about the possibilities of working in this industry and creating babies the whole world could possibly see and fall in love with.

Collecting Antique Baby Dolls

The word authentic is often connected to expensive, but this is a misconception. True if you collect antique baby dolls, these could be pricey. Well, it depends on the kind of doll that you want. There are some antique baby dolls that can be bought for only a few hundreds of dollars.

If you're lucky, you may even get these for less. Here is a list of some antique baby dolls that can be obtained by antique baby dolls collectors on a tight budget. These are great dolls with good quality and good history behind them.

One example is the Armand Marseille. These are antique German dolls that is said to be one of the best antique baby dolls on the market today. They are extremely common which some collectors believe make it a non-rarity but there are still other collectors who go for these kinds of antique baby dolls.

Just with all the manufacturers of authentic German dolls, there are Armand Marseille dolls that have been restored. Collectors who buy antique baby dolls specifically the Armand Marseille make sure that the dolls they get have authentic parts. These are pricey though but there are Armand Marseille dolls that can be purchased below $500.

Another popular antique baby dolls for collectors are the Kestner Shoulderhead Dolls. These are well loved and popular German made bisque dolls. The rarer the Kestner Shoulderhead Doll is, the more expensive it is.

If the collector of antique baby dolls are on a budget, there is still another option for them. They can look for the lovely shoulderheaded versions and buy these instead. Though the classic trademark of the Kestner Shoulderhead Dolls have their mouths open. The less pricey antique baby dolls of this kind have their mouths closed.

Collectors also pay close attention to the features, painting, and the material of the Kestner Shoulderhead Dolls. These should be made of bisque which make it really authentic.

The third most popular antique baby dolls for collectors are the antique dollhouse dolls. These are made from papier mache, wax, wood, bisque, and china. They are small and the models of the bisque dolls vary.

The best thing about this doll is that a lot of collectors do their best to get their hands on these kinds of antique baby dolls therefore they are vastly produced. They are also cheaper compared to the other dolls because these can be bought for $200 to $300.

The German toddler dolls were manufactured in the 1900s and were originally display dolls. Nowadays, these are considered to be antique baby dolls for collectors. They usually come with a rocking chair or an old cradle.

Reborn Baby Dolls and the Markets They Sell In

Reborn dolls are fast becoming a phenomenon in the doll world. Each doll is an individual artwork with its own unique appeal for collectors.

Who reborn dolls are sold to is really interesting. Unlike other dolls the appeal of reborn dolls goes far outside normal doll collector spheres. There is a market for the classic doll collector and these collectors scramble to get the best of the best from the reborn artists.

But there have been some new mode of buyers that have opened up the art of reborning. These new reborn category buyers are making a profound impact on the lives of those that have discovered the positive effect a reborn doll can have.

The bereavement collector, for want of a better name, is one group that is finding comfort from being able to hold a reborn baby that resembles the child they have lost.

Many people find this a little strange and the word creepy has been suggested at times but in our opinion it is not right nor fair to  impose on a grieving person the right and wrong way to get comfort.

I have never heard of a grieving mother replacing a lost child with a reborn doll only that the grieving woman is able to think and grieve more peaceable while holding a reborn doll. To remember her child more completely and even feel some connection to the lost child through the reborn.

Another area where reborn baby dolls are having a truly positive effect on lives is in the area of Alzheimer’s and dementia patients. As these diseases advance it makes communication between patients and carers difficult.

Reborn dolls work best with this group, if they are introduced in the early stages of the disease and work their magic on female patients better than male.

The reborn dolls take female patients back to a time when they were active, loved, and much needed. Having a baby to care for seems to calm the patients and helps with lowering drug use and communicating with carers.

Again some people tend to see this as degrading and a bit creepy for the patients but in realty the patients are forgetting the present and more focused on the distant past.

We believe that anything that makes a difference to the happiness of a once productive member of our society is a gift for them. If a reborn baby can make life better for the elderly then we should be getting one for every patient that wants one.

If you are a reborn artist and are interested in learning more about selling your dolls we have developed a system that walks you through the online business of selling your dolls.

Reborn Baby Dolls

Recently there is a hot trend in a very unique hobby, which is having a Reborn Doll. The term Reborn Doll refers to a vinyl baby doll, that has been customized by a process of repainting and enhancement to resemble a human baby. The process of creating a Reborn Doll is referred to as Reborning.

Not everyone understands reborning, the technique of Reborning has evolved over the past five years, as hobbyists and doll artists have refined the painting techniques and added technical enhancements, such as a heartbeat simulator. To the uninitiated it's a world of strange obsession, to the folks that do understand, it provides endless hours of irreplaceable pleasure. More recently special Reborn doll kits are available, and mechanical enhancements are seen, such a battery powered breathing mechanism to simulate the breathing movements of a sleeping baby.

That pleasure is derived from beauty, artistry, and uniqueness of each doll, because just like human babies, reborn dolls come in every conceivable shape size and color - nowadays there are Caucasian, Asian, and African American Reborn Dolls.

Reborn dolls are exactly as they sound, they are dolls that have been stripped of their factory finishes and been "reborn" and transformed in to realistic looking babies. A search for 'reborn' in the eBay dolls category yields painstakingly refinished dolls made to look sometimes eerily like real babies.

Sometimes in mid July this year, in Australia, frantic police have smashed a window to rescue a seemingly unconscious baby from a locked vehicle, only to find it was a extremely lifelike doll, which is the reborn doll. Similar incident in the US when the window of a new Hummer was broken by police trying to rescue a "baby" that turned out to be a doll belonging to the owner's wife.

From real skin tones and micro-rooted hair, a perfectly weighted body filled with special soft products, this is truly a multi-dimensional art..these babies look and feel real. Reborning baby dolls has become a unique art skills and some of the famous artists in this field excel in this very niche business. A lot of people also take it as a hobby for the doll making as there are many tools available for ones to pursue on the interest.

Their chests rise and fall and you can hear a tiny heartbeat, but these babies for sale over the Internet are not alive. They are not only popular mainly with collectors, but also with nostalgic grandparents and grieving parents. "Cuddle therapy" is what one reborning Website calls the hobby -- the dolls' bodies can be fitted with electronic devices that mimic a heartbeat and breathing.

As the dolls grow more popular, doll-makers keep adding new details to simulate the experience of holding a real baby. There are reborns that seem to breathe, ones that have a faint heartbeat, others that feel warm to the touch, since they come with heating packs. There are dolls modelled after premature babies that are sold with incubators, a breathing apparatus taped to their nostrils. Some makers add a milky, baby-powder scent. Doll-maker Becker washes her reborns repeatedly in baby shampoo so they no longer smell of vinyl but like a freshly bathed infant.

You don't stop playing with dolls because you grow old. You grow old because you stop playing with dolls.

Another tip from the Baby Doll Boutique: making a magnetic pacifier for reborn baby dolls

Making a magnetic/modified pacifier for reborn dolls

Here's how I have been making magnetic plastic pacifiers for use with reborn dolls: [removed][removed]

Supplies: a suitable size plastic pacifier, sharp craft knife/scissors, super glue, 2 appropriate size strong magnets (Earth/Neo magnets seem popular),colored felt cut in small oval or circle (to cover magnet once glued) Clip the rubber or silicone nipple off the pacifier by pulling it away from pacifier body and snipping with scissors or craft knife (careful!)

Sometimes I like to leave a bit of the nipple material and stick the small magnet to the plastic inside the left over area. (allows for the paci to look like it is actually in the 'dolls' mouth with a bit of nipple showing. Works great for parted lips.

Before gluing the magnet to the pacifier, chose which side/pole of the magnet will be glued down...as the opposite side/pole with go inside the dolls head, behind the lips. Some pacifiers will have a ridge where the nipple meets the plastic. If you need it to be flush/flat you will need to trim away excess plastic before gluing on the magnet. Carefully use the craft knife to 'whittle' away the plastic, use care that the knife does not nick other areas of the pacifier while you cut! Some pacifiers need a bit of a divot (hollowed out)area for the magnet to sit in. Don't give up...it can be done!

Once the magnet has been glued and secure, cut an appropriate size piece of felt, I like to use a wine or dark pink color, to cover the exposed magnet preventing scratching of the painted lips.  NOTE: Please use caution handling any custom made magnetic pacifier. It has been made known that magnets can interfere with electronic equipment, computers, credit cards and pace makers. Magnets can be a danger to young children who may swallow them. However, with appropriate care and storage, magnetic pacifiers can be a great prop for reborn dolls!

To glue a magnet inside vinyl head, behind the lips:

(NOTE: some like to have a piece of felt glued behind the lips BEFORE applying the magnet, for added material protection, this is up to you.)

Be sure to use an extra strong magnet in this case! Have the doll's head upside down on your lap (easy to hold between your knees) use a q-tip/Popsicle stick/toothpick anything to reach in the doll's head to the lip area, to apply the glue, (I use super glue for added strength, the gel kind works great!) A small amount is all that is needed. Be sure to apply the glue right on the lip area, like between the lips, hold the head up to a light to help see thru the lips.

Once the glue is applied on the inside, have the prepared pacifier, or another magnet ready to hold against the doll's lips ON THE OUTSIDE. This is where your knees (or protected clamping devise) come in handy. Grasp the doll's head, with the neck opening up (in your knees or other holding source) and drop a small magnet inside the head. Then hold the opposite magnet or prepared magnetic pacifier to the OUTSIDE of the dolls lips, exactly how you think the pacifier looks the best on the lips, not to high or to low, like, right in the center. Tip the head to allow the dropped magnet to tumble towards the doll's lips...waalah...the magnet will be grabbed to the vinyl by the outside magnetic pacifier (or opposite magnet.)

Allow the two magnets to stay applied until the one inside is secure. If you like (and I always do) glue a piece of felt INSIDE over the doll's mouth area BEFORE putting stuffing/weighting material into the head. This prevents the magnet from possibly snagging on the stuffing, or other material.

A tip from the Baby Doll Boutique: How to make a fake formula bottle: for use with reborn baby dolls

Here's my way of making fake formula/milk bottles

supplies needed; clear plastic baby bottle, bottle nipple with ring and disk, something to stir with, hot water, carpenters glue (yellow), strong glue, like super glue for sealing, silicone (aquarium type is fine) for sealing hole in nipple if so desired, tooth pick NOTE: I usually mix my fake formula in the bottle itself, so have the chosen bottle prepared, and choose your method of sealing (either just the nipple hole is sealed ((sealant inside nipple top))or the sealing disk will be glued to the top of the bottle then the nipple and ring is placed on). I like to use any carpenter's glue, the slight yellow glue makes a great formula color. I pour glue into the bottle, up to the one ounce line for a 2 oz bottle, 2 ounce line for a 4 ounce bottle etc. I then add hot water up to the 4,6,8 ounce mark. (leave room for proper shaking for remixing any separated substances and for making those 'gassy' bubbles in the 'fake' formula.) Then mix the 'fake' formula a bit with the end of a spoon, Popsicle stick, paint brush handle etc.(for 'breast milk just add extra water for a thinner consistency)

To 'seal' the fake bottle: Be sure the top edge of the bottle is dry, apply a thin line of glue to the very edge of the bottle opening. Set on the little sealing disk, aligning to cover the entire opening. Quickly screwing on the ring and nipple helps with alignment. Screw on tightly let dry for an hour, and shake! If you choose not to be able to remove the nipple and ring, then also apply the glue to the thread of the nipple ring and threads on the bottle itself, thin lines of glue should do. Screw on the nipple and ring tightly

Sealing the hole in the nipple: to allow fake milk to fill the nipple (I don't care for this method as there is always the potential for the silicone plug to dislodge, thus allowing leaking, but some reborn doll collectors like the realism!) Using the silicone, aquarium type seams to be the favorite, apply to the end of a toothpick and carefully put it inside the nipple to cover the hole area, I would allow this to dry for at least a day, then follow the above methods, minus gluing the sealing disk to the top of the bottle. I would glue, again super glue works great here, the nipple and the ring to the bottle, apply the glue to the threads and screw on tightly, allow to dry before shaking.

Another note: I have only thrown out this type of fake formula one time in six years...all the others are still like new!Be aware that if you choose anything organic or like paint, vanilla flavoring to color formula...it may get moldy!

Other recipes for 'fake' formula and juices (Remember that 'real' food products will get moldy after a period of time)

Formula: white colored fabric softener mixed with water, a few drops of vanilla flavoring added to any white mixture, white glue with a bit of yellow paint, few teaspoons of flour to water white acrylic paint to paint the inside of a clear bottle, gives the illusion of formula no liquid need, putting white poly fill (stuffing for bears and dolls),inside a clear bottle (the least realistic though) great for young children's play doll bottles!

Apple juice:brown marker dipped in water until the desired color, a drop each of red and orange food coloring added to about 6-8 ounces of water,

Orange juice:one to a few drops each of yellow and red of food coloring to 6-8 oz of water, one to a few drops of red and yellow acrylic paint added to water

If your reborn doll does not have an open mouth, you can still use a 'fake' formula bottle! Some people do not use a nipple at all. They glue the disk and nipple less ring to the bottle, and just place the bottle to the lips of the doll, some add a magnet to the disk before sealing and a magnet inside the doll behind the lips, drawing the bottle to the doll's mouth. Using an empty, white, or any colored bottle for this is great for a reborn that may look like it's drinking by itself (the light weight helps)I use a 'fake' formula bottle with a nipple, sealed tightly and I push on the top of the nipple, inverting it in on itself...thus making it barely visible! Then I put the bottle to the doll's mouth, pushing just a bit, and wallah, looks like the baby doll is drinking from the bottle!

Finding Affordable Reborn Baby Dolls

Reborn baby dolls or fake babies are fast becoming a collectible item. All types of women and some men , also, are eager to own a reborn baby doll which not only gives them almost the same pleasure and warmth that a real baby would, but, teaches them to take care of a human baby also. Therefore there are many auction websites that cater to this demand.

Some the most popular websites selling reborn baby dolls are “eBay”, “Amazon”, “ubid”, “bidz” , “reborn”, “exceptional-reborn-nursery”, etc. The purchaser ought to visit all such auction sites in order to get not only a competitive price, but, a list of features and attributes of his or her future fake baby.

Some manufacturers use products that are user-friendly. They install modified pacifiers with no magnets that makes it safe even for people with pacemakers. The baby’s skin is made of soft material and vinyl that is not only beautiful to look, soft to touch but is hypoallergenic also. Like wise the bunch of hair, too, is hypoallergenic. The granules used in hands and feet are mostly user-friendly as well as make hands and feet aesthetically pleasing.

The clothes that come with the reborn baby doll are also auctioned on the web sites and a buyer gets a chance to choose the clothes he or she wants his baby to come wearing in.These clothes can be cheap or very costly depending on the quality but there are two aspects that need highlighting here. One is that mostly these clothes are hypoallergenic and two, they of almost the same size as the real baby’s. The latter aspect of the cloths of a reborn baby doll gives them an added advantage as a foster mummy can always learn to handle them for her own future baby. A foster mummy need not be some one who has never had a child before. She can be someone who’s already had children who are now past childhood and she just wants to relive her kids’ childhood. It can even be some one who wants to see how does it feel like to have twins or triplets as fake babies come in pairs and three somes also .
